Crashing is a six-part comedy series written by Pheobe Waller-Bridge. After watching Fleabag, I wanted to see what else Waller-Bridge had written, and although slightly less stylistic than Fleabag, you can see Waller-Bridge's unique comedic voice writ large in this show. Crashing centres around a group of young professionals living in a disused hospital building as property guardians. The group is full of quirky characters, including Melody, who is an eccentric French Painter who becomes fascinated with an older gentleman called Colin, and he becomes her muse. Sam is an obnoxious estate agent, but who we ultimately warm to. And then, the central trio at the centre comprises Anothony, Kate and Lulu. Anthony and Kate are engaged, but Anthony's childhood friend Lulu moves in, and old feelings emerge. And to avoid any spoilers, that is all I will say…
But what I will say is that Crashing is an underrated gem. I am sure that with the success of Fleabag, many people will be doing the same as I am going over Waller-Bridge's back catalogue. But the show is so great it deserved the recognition when it first aired, and if it did so, I believe it would have been picked up for a second series, which I think Waller-Bridge was hoping for. Crashing has a quintessential Britishness about it, in a similar vein to Friday Night Dinner or Fresh Meat, but with Waller-Bridge's comedic style, the show is overtly sexual and crass, but in the best way possible. There is a genuine warmth to the storytelling, and in only a few number of episodes, you witness a lot of character growth. The will they won't pull between Anthony and Lulu is perfectly observed, and often, these storylines are drawn out and ultimately become annoying, but its conclusion in Crashing is swift but written well that it feels deserved. Crashing is so enjoyable to watch. It is hilarious and heartwarming, and you want to stay with these characters forever, making it an extremely bingeable show. I highly recommend it!
